More vegetables from this year's harvest enter the market in Poland
More young vegetables from domestic crops are appearing on local wholesale markets in Poland. Interestingly, despite not the best weather, their trade is starting earlier than a year ago. Young carrots and young beetroots in bunches, as well as young celery are already available on the market. The first quotations of celery in bunches appeared around 10 May, while a year ago it was only around 20 May. Young domestic carrots in bunches did not start until late May/early June a year ago. Young beetroot in bunches also appeared earlier. It is clear that producers of these vegetables are keen to enter the market early to take advantage of the low supply and better prices, as these prices can then fall quickly.
Has this strategy been successful this season? It seems so, although it must be said clearly -0 prices at the start of the season are not much higher than a year ago, even though costs have risen dramatically.
The first quotations of young carrots on local exchanges are 3.50-4.50 PLN/bunch (a year ago 3-4 PLN/bunch, only almost two weeks later). Young beetroots in bunches are currently priced at 2.00-3.00 PLN/bunch, but this is after a rapid discount, because not long ago it was 3.50-4.00 PLN/piece. The current price level is comparable to that of last year. When it comes to young celery, prices on exchanges are in the range of 2.00-3.50 PLN/bunch. A year ago it was 2.50-3.00 PLN/bunch, so here too the difference is not spectacular.
As far as vegetables that started the season earlier and about which we have written on fresh-market.pl are concerned, it should be noted that prices for these items have been falling in recent days (despite fairly cool weather). Courgette, green beans, broccoli and cauliflowers have all dropped in price. These have recently fallen sharply and are now priced at 2.50-5.00 PLN per head in the small wholesale trade, whereas a year ago they were 5.00-6.00 PLN per head. Broccoli is priced at 4.00-6.00 PLN/pc. A year ago it was 6.00 PLN/pc. on average. Beans are priced at 28.00-35.00 PLN per kilo (large variation by region), while a year ago it was 28.00-45.00 PLN per kilo.
