Onion exports from Poland at the end of Q3 2021

Poland - the export volume of onion (CN category 070310 - Onion and shallots, fresh or chilled) after Q3 2021 amounted to 109.0 thousand tonnes and its value reached PLN 222.3 million. This means a decline in exports in this category year-on-year both in terms of volume and value.

In the first three quarters of 2020, exports in this category amounted to 118.8 thousand tonnes and PLN 263.0 million. This gives a decrease in volume by 9.8 thousand tonnes, i.e. by 8.2 per cent, and a decrease in value by as much as PLN 40.6 million, i.e. by 15.5 per cent.

As far as the average price of onions in export in the discussed period is concerned, since we analyse the aggregated category (onions, spring onions and shallots) it will make more sense to refer only to the prices of the category 07031019 - Fresh or chilled onions, except spring onions. In the first three quarters of 2021, the average price of this onion was 1.97 PLN/kg, compared to 2.12 PLN/kg in 2020, which means a decrease of 7.1 per cent.

The Netherlands has strengthened its position as the first recipient of Polish onion, increasing its volume from 28.8 to 32.4 thousand tonnes between the first half of 2020 and the same period of 2021.

The second place is occupied by the United Kingdom, where the volume decreased from 27.0 to 26.3 thousand tonnes.

Belgium moved up to third place from fifth place with a volume increase from 8.6 to 11.8 thousand tonnes.

Germany remains in fourth place with a reduction in volume from 9.6 to 9.0 thousand tonnes.

France dropped to fifth place from third with a volume reduction from 14.4 to 7.6 thousand tonnes.

It should be noted, however, that France is the only country among the above-mentioned which, in the structure of Polish onion imports, has a significant share of Polish spring onion. If only onions of category 07031019 are taken into account, France, with a volume of 4.8 thousand tonnes, is below Romania (5.5 thousand tonnes).

As for the average prices of onion exported to these countries (also taking into account only category 07031019), the most expensive Polish onion was sold in the first three quarters of 2021 to the Netherlands and the UK - at an average of 2.16 PLN/kg, and the cheapest to Belgium - at an average of 1.45 PLN/kg.
