Bronisze: Domestic Cherry Prices Fall Amid Import Pressure, Summit Dominates

2026-06-29 19:00

Wholesale cherry prices in Poland have dropped sharply at the end of June, with domestic supply peaking and significant volumes of imports from Serbia, Greece, and Turkey still present on the market.

At the Bronisze wholesale market near Warsaw, the supply of Polish cherries increased rapidly in the last week of June 2026, leading to a marked decline in prices. On 26 June, average wholesale prices for domestic cherries ranged from €1.6–2.3/kg (7–10 PLN/kg), with only occasional lots of very large-calibre fruit reaching about €4.2/kg (18 PLN/kg). For the popular Summit variety, prices on 26 June typically stood at €2.3–2.8/kg (10–12 PLN/kg), with top-quality batches fetching up to €3.5/kg (15 PLN/kg). Lower-quality or less sought-after varieties such as Vega were trading below €2.3/kg (10 PLN/kg).

Large supermarket chains, including Lidl and Biedronka, continued to offer predominantly imported cherries. Promotional retail prices in both chains dropped to €3.0/kg (12.99 PLN/kg) for the period 25–28 June, compared to the regular price of €5.8/kg (24.99 PLN/kg). As of 25 June, domestic cherries had not yet appeared on the shelves of these major retailers, with imports from Greece and Turkey dominating. Producer groups began purchasing Polish cherries for supermarket supply at around €2.8/kg (12 PLN/kg) for fruit above 24 mm in diameter.

The influx of imported cherries, especially from Serbia and Greece, has strongly affected the Polish market and limited the potential for price increases for domestic fruit. Wholesale transactions for imported cherries of 28 mm calibre were observed at €2.8–3.3/kg (12–14 PLN/kg). However, importers have signalled a rapid reduction in deliveries due to heat-related spoilage risks and high transport costs. Spanish cherries were largely absent from the market due to high prices.

Consumer demand remains focused on dark-coloured varieties such as Carmen, which, in top quality, have reached prices above €4.7/kg (20 PLN/kg) and even €5.8/kg (25 PLN/kg) at wholesale. The market is awaiting the arrival of the Kordia variety, as buyers continue to show strong preference for dark cherries. Meanwhile, the high temperatures have accelerated the ripening and harvest of domestic cherries, contributing to increased supply and further price pressure.
