Bronisze: Domestic New Potato Prices Drop Amid Higher Supply
Domestic new potatoes are now widely available on the Polish market, with wholesale prices at Bronisze stabilizing and import volumes remaining significant. The national potato planting area for 2026 has dropped sharply from the previous year.
At the Bronisze wholesale market near Warsaw in late June 2026, Polish new potatoes of popular varieties are trading mostly at €0.47–0.70/kg (2.00–3.00 PLN/kg). The Irga variety commands prices starting from €0.47/kg (2.00 PLN/kg), while yellow-fleshed varieties are generally slightly cheaper, though the price gap has narrowed compared to earlier in the season. Imported young potatoes from Egypt and Cyprus are still present at Bronisze, offered at €0.47–0.58/kg (2.00–2.50 PLN/kg). Meanwhile, stored potatoes from the 2025 harvest have marginal market significance, with Polish stock selling at about €0.15/kg (0.66 PLN/kg, calculated from 10 PLN per 15-kg bag), and imported stored potatoes from Holland and Belgium at roughly €0.22/kg (0.93 PLN/kg, 14 PLN per 15-kg bag).
Poland imported 38,830 tonnes of potatoes in the first four months of 2026. Germany remained the top supplier with 20,260 tonnes at an average price of €0.29/kg (1.26 PLN/kg). Other key sources included Cyprus (4,380 tonnes at €0.66/kg, 2.82 PLN/kg), Greece (4,280 tonnes at €0.58/kg, 2.47 PLN/kg), and Egypt (3,450 tonnes at €0.39/kg, 1.69 PLN/kg). In April alone, 15,880 tonnes of potatoes were imported, with Greek potatoes averaging €0.62/kg (2.64 PLN/kg), Spanish at €0.70/kg (3.00 PLN/kg), and Dutch potatoes at €0.98/kg (4.22 PLN/kg).
The domestic potato planting area for 2026 is reported at 185,120 hectares, down significantly from the record 210,761 hectares in 2025. The current area is comparable to levels seen in 2020–2023. The largest potato-growing region remains Wielkopolskie with 28,300 hectares. The drop in planted area follows two years of expansion when potatoes were seen as an alternative to less profitable crops.
Demand at wholesale markets is focused on domestic new potatoes, but imported lots continue to find buyers seeking specific culinary qualities, such as firmer texture. The increased availability of Polish new potatoes has shifted most trade away from imported product, though some buyers still prefer imports as an alternative to 'old' stored potatoes.
