Bronisze: Field Cucumbers at €1.2–1.4/kg, Greenhouse Prices Drop Amid Heatwave

2026-06-29 19:00

Wholesale cucumber prices in Poland have fallen sharply in late June, with significant oversupply and high temperatures driving rapid declines, especially for greenhouse produce.

The Bronisze wholesale market reported a strong decline in prices for greenhouse (brodawkowe) cucumbers, with transactions as low as €0.3/kg (1.50 PLN/kg) and standard offers at €0.7/kg (3.00 PLN/kg) in late June 2026. Large volumes from covered cultivation have led to oversupply, and prices frequently fall to €0.5/kg (2.00 PLN/kg) or below as sellers seek quick turnover due to heat-related quality concerns.

Field-grown (gruntowe) cucumbers remain in high demand and command significantly higher prices. At Bronisze, the smallest field cucumbers are trading for €1.2–1.4/kg (5.00–6.00 PLN/kg), while larger sizes fetch about €0.7/kg (3.00 PLN/kg). Similar price levels are seen on other wholesale markets: Łódź "Zjazdowa" at €0.7–1.4/kg (3–6 PLN/kg), Poznań WGO at €1.3–1.5/kg (28–32 PLN/5kg), and Lublin's Elizówka at €1.2–1.3/kg (5–5.5 PLN/kg).

Greenhouse smooth cucumbers from new plantings at Bronisze are priced around €0.7/kg (3.00 PLN/kg), while produce from older plantings drops to €0.3–0.5/kg (1.50–2.00 PLN/kg). On other markets, greenhouse cucumbers generally trade at €0.6–0.7/kg (2.5–3 PLN/kg). Prices are now less than half of those seen during the brief mid-June shortage, when some lots exceeded €1.4/kg (6 PLN/kg).

Demand is focused on field-grown cucumbers, which are preferred for their taste and traditional use. Retail promotions are also evident, with Lidl offering Polish field cucumbers at €0.9/kg (3.99 PLN/kg) from June 25–28. Buyer caution is reported due to the risk of spoilage in high temperatures, leading to slower trade and reluctance to purchase large volumes.

The recent heatwave has accelerated harvesting and market arrivals, increasing supply and putting additional pressure on prices. Producers are selling quickly to avoid losses from reduced shelf life. The market continues to show high price volatility, with shifts of several PLN/kg within days depending on supply and weather.
