Early Polish Plums See Lower Start Prices, Trade Groups Begin Purchases

The 2026 Polish plum season has opened with lower starting prices than previous years, as wholesale and farm-gate rates for early varieties such as Kalipso and Lepotica drop amid increased supply and ongoing harvest.

On the Bronisze wholesale market near Warsaw, plum prices on 28 July 2026 ranged from €0.6–1.4/kg (2.75–6 PLN/kg) for general plums, €0.7–0.9/kg (3–4 PLN/kg) for 'węgierka'-type varieties, and €1.2–1.6/kg (5–7 PLN/kg) for large-fruited varieties. These prices reflect a significant decrease compared to the previous season's opening levels.

Grower groups in the Grójec region have begun organized buying of early purple plum varieties, with starting farm-gate offers for Kalipso at €0.7–0.8/kg (3.00–3.50 PLN/kg) and for other purple plums at €0.6/kg (2.50 PLN/kg) for fruit above 35 mm diameter and no more than 20% green surface. A small local buyer in the same region offered a slightly higher price of €0.7/kg (3.20 PLN/kg) for similar quality.

Last year, the season opened at a farm-gate price of €1.2/kg (5.00 PLN/kg), and two years ago at €0.8/kg (3.50 PLN/kg). This year’s lower starting prices are attributed to higher supply and intensive fruit drop caused by drought, though the overall crop remains at a good level. The smaller number of fruits per tree and adequate water at critical times have resulted in larger fruit size and good quality.

Wholesale supplies at Bronisze include Kalipso, early Lepotica (harvested from lighter soils), and Katinka. Prices for these varieties have dropped to €0.7–0.8/kg (3.30–3.50 PLN/kg). A premium was observed for the 'Rana' variety due to its larger fruit size.

Sunny and warm weather is forecasted to continue, which is expected to further increase sugar content in the fruit. Market demand is focused on high-quality, large-sized plums suitable for retail chains.
