Heatwave Drives Down Greenhouse Cucumber Prices at Bronisze, Field Cucumber Demand Strong
Wholesale cucumber prices in Poland have fallen sharply in late June due to high supply and intense heat, with the lowest rates for greenhouse types at the Bronisze market. Field-grown cucumbers remain in high demand and command significantly higher prices.
At the Bronisze wholesale market near Warsaw, late June 2026 saw a steep drop in prices for greenhouse (brodawkowe) cucumbers. Standard greenhouse cucumbers are trading at €0.7–1.4/kg (3.0–6.0 PLN/kg), with oversupplied lots falling to €0.3–0.5/kg (1.5–2.0 PLN/kg). Greenhouse smooth cucumbers from new plantings are priced at about €0.7/kg (3.0 PLN/kg), while those from older plantings are at €0.3–0.5/kg (1.5–2.0 PLN/kg). This price drop follows a brief spike in mid-June when shortages pushed prices above €1.2–1.4/kg (5–6 PLN/kg). High temperatures have accelerated supply and forced growers to sell quickly, putting further downward pressure on prices.
Field-grown (gruntowe) cucumbers are currently the highest valued segment. At Bronisze, the smallest field cucumbers fetch €1.2–1.4/kg (5.0–6.0 PLN/kg), with prices declining as calibre increases, reaching about €0.7/kg (3.0 PLN/kg) for the largest. These cucumbers are in strong demand, as buyers and consumers prefer the light-skinned field types for their traditional taste and domestic origin. Oversupplied greenhouse cucumbers, especially the dark-skinned brodawkowe, are less popular and face weaker demand.
Across other wholesale markets, prices vary. On 25 June 2026, at the Łódź "Zjazdowa" market, cucumbers were priced at €0.7–1.4/kg (3–6 PLN/kg). At the Poznań "WGRO" market, field cucumbers cost €1.3–1.5/kg (28–32 PLN per 5 kg), while greenhouse cucumbers sold for €1.2–1.4/kg (25–30 PLN per 5 kg). On the Lublin "Elizówka" market, field cucumbers traded at €1.2–1.3/kg (5–5.5 PLN/kg). In retail, promotional prices for Polish field cucumbers at Lidl from 25 to 28 June were €0.9/kg (3.99 PLN/kg).
Rapidly rising temperatures in late June have intensified supply pressure as growers harvest and sell quickly to avoid quality loss. Wholesale trade has slowed on open-air markets due to the heat, and buyers are cautious about purchasing large volumes, citing concerns over sell-through and product quality in hot weather.
Imports and exports of cucumbers are ongoing, but phytosanitary controls remain strict. On 25 June, a shipment of 6 tonnes of fresh cucumbers from Russia was turned back at the Kazakh border due to incomplete phytosanitary inspection, underlining regulatory scrutiny in regional trade.
