Lower Polish Beet Harvest Forecast, Wholesale Prices Stable in Early August

2026-08-05 08:45

Poland's 2026 beetroot crop is forecast at 260,000 tonnes, down from last year due to adverse spring weather. Wholesale prices at the Bronisze market in early August are stable, with mature beets at €0.2–0.3/kg.

According to preliminary estimates from the Central Statistical Office (GUS), Poland's 2026 harvest of red beetroot (buraki ćwikłowe) is expected at approximately 260,000 tonnes. This represents a decrease compared to 2025, with the nationwide field vegetable harvest forecast to fall by 4.5% year-on-year. The reduction is attributed to spring frosts, low rainfall, and heatwaves in June that affected initial plant development.

At the Bronisze wholesale market near Warsaw on 5 August 2026, mature beetroot prices are quoted at €0.2–0.3/kg (0.9–1.3 PLN/kg). Young beets sold in bunches are trading at €0.3–0.5 per bunch (1.5–2 PLN/pęczek). These prices reflect current supply and buyer demand at one of Poland's key wholesale distribution points.

Early in the growing season, cool weather, water shortages, and low soil moisture delayed fieldwork and resulted in uneven and late emergence of beet crops. In many regions, irrigation systems were activated sooner than in previous years, and late April frosts locally damaged early-planted beets.

Weather conditions improved in June and July as rainfall increased soil moisture, supporting plant health. However, late June heatwaves limited further plant growth, and the risk of fungal diseases and pest outbreaks increased, prompting more intensive crop protection measures on some farms.

GUS notes that the final beetroot harvest volume will depend on weather conditions during the remainder of the growing season. No export or import figures for fresh beets have been reported for this period.
