Malina prices surge in Bronisze as field supply drops after heatwave

2026-07-02 17:25

Wholesale prices for raspberries at the Bronisze market reached €7.0–8.2/kg (30–35 PLN/kg) in early July 2026, driven by a sharp reduction in field-grown supply following persistent high temperatures.

At the Bronisze wholesale market near Warsaw, raspberries (maliny) from tunnel cultivation are currently the primary offering. Prices for these raspberries in early July 2026 stand at approximately €7.0–8.2/kg (30–35 PLN/kg). The reduction in supply of field-grown raspberries is attributed to recent heatwaves, which have both limited harvest volumes and affected fruit quality.

Growers report that harvesting operations are now restricted to the early morning hours, typically between 4:00 and 9:00, due to extreme daytime heat. After 9:00, high temperatures make fieldwork difficult and increase the risk of fruit and leaf damage. In some cases, yields have dropped sharply, with reports of only 70 kg of raspberries harvested per hectare on particularly affected farms.

The heatwave has caused visible damage, especially on the southern, more sun-exposed sides of raspberry rows, where leaves are scorched and fruit turns pale. Varietal differences are noted, with Glen Ample showing better resistance due to denser foliage, while Glen Carron and similar types with more exposed fruit have suffered heavier losses. Intensive irrigation is being used, but excessive watering can lead to fruit cracking, creating challenges in balancing stress mitigation and fruit quality.

Demand at wholesale markets remains unstable. Many small traders and market sellers reduced their activity during the hottest days, further complicating the commercial situation. Tunnel-grown raspberries are currently dominating the market because field-grown supply is limited both by heat stress and labor constraints.

Monitoring and pest management are ongoing concerns, with increased attention to Drosophila suzukii (spotted wing drosophila) and botrytis (grey mould) in both field and tunnel crops. The commercial quality of available raspberries is being affected not only by weather but also by pest pressure.
