Onion Imports in Poland Surpass 50,000 Tons as Dutch Supply Dominates Market

2026-07-06 07:25

In the first four months of 2026, Poland imported over 50,000 tons of onions and shallots, with more than two-thirds coming from the Netherlands. The average import price for this period was about €0.26/kg.

From January to April 2026, Poland imported 50,200 tons of onions and shallots with a total value of €12,980,000. The Netherlands supplied 33,980 tons, accounting for over 67% of total imports, at an average price of €0.28/kg (1.18 PLN/kg). German onions followed as the second largest import, with 14,000 tons at an average price of €0.18/kg (0.78 PLN/kg). Other suppliers, including Belgium, Italy, Slovakia, Spain, Egypt, and North Macedonia, provided much smaller volumes, each below 700 tons for the period.

In April 2026 alone, Poland imported 13,560 tons of onions and shallots, with the average price for all imports at €0.20/kg (0.86 PLN/kg). The Netherlands delivered 10,190 tons at €0.19/kg (0.83 PLN/kg), while Germany supplied 3,080 tons at €0.18/kg (0.78 PLN/kg). Imports from North Macedonia were priced significantly higher at €0.52/kg (2.24 PLN/kg) for 152 tons. Other minor origins included Spain, Czechia, Ukraine, and Turkey, all with volumes below 50 tons each.

Domestic onion production is not referenced for the current period, but the large import volumes and low prices indicate continued strong demand from Polish buyers and a reliance on foreign supply, particularly from Western Europe. The commercial focus remains on imported onions, as domestic product is not yet prominently present in early July trade data.

Weather conditions are not specifically mentioned for onions, but recent reports note that improved weather in early July increased market activity for other vegetables. There is no indication of any significant disruption to onion trade due to weather in Poland during this period.
