Polish asparagus prices fall to 15 PLN/kg as supply increases, imports surge
Wholesale and retail prices for Polish asparagus have declined sharply from early-season highs as domestic supply rises, but imports continue to set records due to high consumer demand.
At the start of the 2026 season, retail prices for Polish asparagus reached 35 PLN/kg, but within several days dropped to 26 PLN/kg. As domestic supply increased from late April onwards, the price has now fallen to about 15 PLN/kg for a bunch of asparagus in mid-June 2026.
The high prices at the start of the season were attributed to a prolonged, cold winter and a chilly spring in Poland, which limited the early harvest and reduced availability. These weather conditions delayed the local asparagus season and contributed to initial supply shortages.
Polish asparagus production area is estimated at 2,000–2,200 hectares in 2026, with a growing focus on green asparagus. The Wielkopolskie region leads national production, accounting for over 61% of the area. Wolsztyn county and the Przemęt commune are the main production centers, with Przemęt alone responsible for 19% of Poland's asparagus acreage.
Despite the seasonal increase in supply, domestic production remains insufficient to meet Polish consumer demand. Imports of asparagus into Poland have reached record levels in 2026, while exports of Polish asparagus have decreased. Foreign suppliers view Poland as an attractive market for asparagus exports.
The concentration of production in Wielkopolskie has increased, while the area under asparagus in Dolnośląskie has declined, placing it second nationally, followed by Lubelskie. Interest in protected cultivation is rising to enable earlier harvests.
