Polish Blueberry Season: Wholesale Prices Fall Amid Supply Glut and Weather Losses
Wholesale prices for Polish blueberries have dropped sharply at the peak of the harvest, with significant price variation between regions and ongoing pressure from both domestic oversupply and imported fruit.
At the Bronisze wholesale market near Warsaw, blueberries were traded on July 29, 2026, at €2.3–4.6/kg (10–20 PLN/kg). In other regional markets, prices varied: in Kalisz, the average was €4.2/kg (18 PLN/kg); in Poznań, prices reached up to €6.0/kg (26 PLN/kg); and in Wrocław, blueberries were offered at €4.4–6.2/kg (19–27 PLN/kg). In Łódź, blueberries in 250 g punnets were sold for €4.2–4.6/kg (18–20 PLN/kg), while loose fruit in crates fetched €2.8–4.2/kg (12–18 PLN/kg). Farm-gate (purchase point) prices for dessert-grade blueberries ranged from €2.4 to €3.7/kg (10.50–16 PLN/kg), depending on size and certification, while industrial and second-class fruit were purchased at €2.0–2.1/kg (8.50–9.00 PLN/kg).
Supermarket retail prices showed a large markup over farm-gate and wholesale levels. Promotional offers in major chains included €6.7/kg (29 PLN/kg) at Biedronka, €5.8/kg (25 PLN/kg) at Lidl, and €4.6/kg (19.99 PLN/kg) at Dino. Standard retail prices outside promotions reached nearly €11.6/kg (50 PLN/kg) in some outlets. Premium and organic blueberries in retail reached €6.9–9.9/kg (30–43 PLN/kg). Despite the domestic season being in full swing, imported blueberries from Peru and Zimbabwe were found in some Polish supermarkets.
The blueberry harvest is ongoing, with early varieties finishing and later varieties still being picked. However, farm supply chains reported a glut due to large returns from supermarket distribution centers in mid-July, causing a backlog in storage facilities and forcing price reductions. The volume of available fruit remains high, putting further downward pressure on prices. Growers reported that the price drop in purchase points from close to €4.6/kg (20 PLN/kg) in early July to €2.4–2.5/kg (10.50–11 PLN/kg) by late July was driven by oversupply and logistics bottlenecks.
Extreme weather has affected the 2026 harvest. In north-eastern Poland, a severe hailstorm during peak harvest destroyed significant portions of a highbush blueberry plantation, causing immediate commercial losses. Earlier in the season, frost and water shortages had already stressed many plantations. Weather-related damage has reduced the market value of affected fruit and may impact yields in future years due to plant injuries.
Growers continue to face strong bargaining pressure from large retail chains, which can source fruit both domestically and from abroad. The presence of imported blueberries on Polish shelves during the peak of the local season has further complicated domestic sales and contributed to price volatility.
