Record cucumber prices at Bronisze as field supply collapses
Polish field cucumber supply is extremely limited in July, driving wholesale prices at Bronisze to record highs of €2.3–2.5/kg, levels not seen in mid-summer in recent years.
Wholesale prices for field-grown cucumbers (ogórki gruntowe) at the Bronisze market in early July 2026 have reached €2.3–2.5/kg (10.00–11.00 PLN/kg), a level typically associated with early spring, not mid-July. This marks a significant increase compared to previous seasons and makes cucumbers one of the most expensive vegetables currently available on the Polish wholesale market.
The sharp price rise is attributed to a severe shortage of field cucumbers. Availability at wholesale markets is described as very low, with supply unable to meet current buyer demand. The scarcity is especially pronounced for the typical light-green field types, such as the Śremski variety.
In contrast, tunnel- and greenhouse-grown cucumbers are more available. Prices for these cucumbers at Bronisze currently range from €0.9–1.2/kg (3.75–5.00 PLN/kg), having previously dropped to €0.3/kg (1.50 PLN/kg) during the recent heatwave due to a glut from rapid ripening.
The supply shortage of field cucumbers follows a period of high temperatures and a recent heatwave, which caused mass ripening and an earlier price collapse for protected cultivation types. The same weather has now resulted in a supply gap for field cucumbers, as plants have exhausted their initial yield flush and new fruit set has slowed.
Buyer demand for cucumbers remains strong, especially for field-grown types, but the limited supply is restricting trade volumes and pushing prices higher.
