Warsaw: Greenhouse cucumber prices surge at Bronisze due to supply drop

Wholesale prices for smooth greenhouse cucumbers in Poland have increased sharply at the Bronisze market, reaching €1.2–1.4/kg, driven by a sudden reduction in supply after many producers ended their crops.

At the Bronisze wholesale market near Warsaw in mid-June 2026, prices for smooth greenhouse cucumbers rose rapidly to €1.2–1.4/kg (5–6 PLN/kg), up from previous levels of around €0.7/kg (3 PLN/kg). This price increase is attributed to a marked decrease in supply as numerous growers concluded their greenhouse cucumber production following a prolonged period of very low prices earlier in the season.

Trade sources report that the limited availability of domestic cucumbers has led to higher prices on wholesale markets. Buyers face reduced volumes, and the gap is partially filled by imports, though Polish product remains in high demand for its freshness. The combination of lower domestic supply and ongoing demand is keeping prices firm.

Weather conditions have played a significant role in the current market situation. Cold nights, with temperatures dropping locally to 5°C, have slowed crop growth and further restricted the volume of cucumbers coming onto the market. This has delayed the transition from greenhouse to field cucumbers, maintaining pressure on supply.

Producers and traders have also highlighted increased scrutiny of product origin in retail chains. Campaigns targeting mislabeling of imported vegetables as Polish are ongoing, reflecting broader concerns about the presence of imported cucumbers and other vegetables in the domestic market.

The rise in cucumber prices is occurring alongside higher prices for other vegetables affected by the same weather patterns, including zucchini and string beans, while the market for tomatoes and cabbages remains stable.
