Wide price gap for cucumbers in Mazovia as field harvest increases

2026-07-06 06:33

Wholesale markets in Poland report a significant price disparity between field-grown and greenhouse cucumbers in early July, with strong buyer demand for the first lots of domestic field cucumbers.

On the Bronisze wholesale market near Warsaw, cucumber prices as of early July 2026 show considerable variation depending on production method and fruit size. Field-grown cucumbers (type śremski), in their first lots, fetch €1.2–1.4/kg (5–6 PLN/kg) for the smallest sizes, and up to €1.6/kg (7 PLN/kg) for select lots, reflecting high demand from buyers. In contrast, greenhouse spiky cucumbers are trading at €0.3–0.7/kg (1.5–3 PLN/kg), with the lowest prices for larger calibers, while small lots still reach up to €0.7/kg. Smooth-skinned greenhouse cucumbers from new plantings are priced around €0.8/kg (3.5 PLN/kg), but those from older plantings fall to €0.3–0.5/kg (1.5–2 PLN/kg).

Other regional wholesale markets reflect similar trends. In Kalisz, field cucumbers are selling for €0.3–0.5/kg (1.5–2 PLN/kg), and greenhouse cucumbers at €0.5/kg (2 PLN/kg). In Łódź, prices for all cucumbers range from €0.5–1.2/kg (2–5 PLN/kg). In Poznań, field cucumbers are priced at €1.2–1.4/kg (25–30 PLN per 5 kg), and greenhouse cucumbers similarly at €1.2–1.3/kg (25–28 PLN per 5 kg).

The supply of cucumbers has increased following a period of intense heat, as cooler weather in early July allowed producers to harvest more easily and deliver larger volumes to markets. This has boosted overall market supply, especially for field cucumbers, and increased trading activity after a brief slowdown during the hottest days.

According to the ARiMR register, the total area under cucumber cultivation in Poland has risen for the first time in several years, reaching 5,438.6 hectares in 2026, up by over 430 hectares compared to 2025. The largest production areas are located in Mazowieckie (1,564.87 ha), Świętokrzyskie (779.37 ha), Łódzkie (731.18 ha), and Wielkopolskie (631.55 ha), with additional significant plantings in Kujawsko-Pomorskie and Małopolskie.

The first field-grown cucumbers are seeing particularly strong demand from buyers at wholesale markets, with prices notably higher than those for greenhouse-grown cucumbers of similar size and quality.
