Wide Price Gap for Cucumbers on Polish Wholesale Markets Amid Field Harvest Surge
Polish wholesale markets are seeing a significant price spread between field-grown and greenhouse cucumbers in early July 2026, with field cucumbers in high demand and trading at more than triple the price of some greenhouse lots.
On the Bronisze wholesale market near Warsaw in early July 2026, prices for field-grown cucumbers (gruntowe) reached €1.2–1.4/kg (5–6 PLN/kg) for the smallest grades, while some lots traded as high as €1.6/kg (7 PLN/kg). In contrast, spined greenhouse cucumbers (brodawkowe spod osłon) fell sharply, with prices for larger sizes dropping to €0.3–0.5/kg (1.5–2 PLN/kg) and only the smallest fetching up to €0.7/kg (3 PLN/kg). Smooth-skinned greenhouse cucumbers (gładkie spod osłon) from new plantings sold for around €0.8/kg (3.5 PLN/kg), but older plantings saw prices as low as €0.3–0.5/kg (1.5–2 PLN/kg) depending on quality and demand. On the Poznań wholesale market (Wielkopolska Gildia Rolno-Ogrodnicza), field cucumbers were priced at €1.2–1.4/kg (25–30 PLN/5 kg) and greenhouse cucumbers at €1.2–1.3/kg (25–28 PLN/5 kg) as of early July. At the Kalisz exchange, field cucumbers traded at €0.3–0.5/kg (1.5–2 PLN/kg), while greenhouse cucumbers stood at €0.5/kg (2 PLN/kg). In Łódź, prices for cucumbers ranged from €0.5 to €1.2/kg (2–5 PLN/kg), reflecting regional supply differences and buyer demand. The price premium for field-grown cucumbers is attributed to their seasonal entry and strong buyer interest, especially for the smallest, highest-quality lots. The recent end of a heatwave led to a marked increase in harvest volumes and greater market supply, as cooler weather allowed producers to resume picking and bring more product to market. Grower reports indicate that the area under cucumber cultivation has increased this season, further supporting the rise in availability on wholesale markets.
