Wide price spread for cucumbers in Mazovia as field supply grows

2026-07-06 07:17

Cucumber prices in Poland show a significant gap between field-grown and greenhouse products, with strong demand for early field cucumbers driving prices up to €1.6/kg at major wholesale markets.

On the Bronisze wholesale market near Warsaw, early July 2026, field-grown cucumbers (type śremski, small grade) are trading at €1.2–1.4/kg (5–6 PLN/kg), with some reports of prices reaching up to €1.6/kg (7 PLN/kg) for the smallest sizes. In contrast, greenhouse bumpy cucumbers are priced at €0.3–0.7/kg (1.5–3 PLN/kg), depending on size, with larger grades at the lower end. Greenhouse smooth cucumbers from new plantings are offered at €0.8/kg (3.5 PLN/kg), while older plantings fetch €0.3–0.5/kg (1.5–2 PLN/kg).

On other regional wholesale markets, such as Giełda Kaliska, field cucumbers are priced at €0.4–0.5/kg (1.5–2 PLN/kg) and greenhouse cucumbers at €0.5/kg (2 PLN/kg). In Łódź, prices for all types range from €0.5 to €1.2/kg (2–5 PLN/kg). In Poznań, both field and greenhouse cucumbers are reported at €1.2–1.4/kg (25–30 PLN/5 kg and 25–28 PLN/5 kg, respectively).

The supply of field cucumbers has increased following a period of extreme heat, as cooler weather improved harvesting conditions and led to greater market availability. This, in turn, has intensified competition and widened the price gap between greenhouse and field cucumbers, with buyers showing a clear preference for fresh field product at the start of the open-field season.

According to the ARiMR registry, the area under cucumber cultivation in Poland has risen for the first time in several years, reaching 5,438.6 hectares in 2026, up by over 430 hectares year-on-year. The largest cucumber-growing regions are Mazowieckie (1,564.9 ha), Świętokrzyskie (779.4 ha), Łódzkie (731.2 ha), and Wielkopolskie (631.6 ha).

Labour availability for hand-picking remains a limiting factor for further expansion, and producers continue to face challenges from climate variability and the need for irrigation. Despite these challenges, active trade and high demand for domestic field cucumbers are reported at the start of July.
