Watermelons still cheap on the Polish Market

2021-09-13 10:57
This year's trading season for watermelons produced in Europe (mainly in the south of the continent, but later in the season also those from Hungary or Ukraine)  started at once unfavourably for producers of this fruit. Cold June resulted in very weak demand for watermelons at this early stage, while supply in Spain quickly found itself at a level that was well above current demand. This built downward pressure on prices from the start.

These trends were also evident on the Polish market. Both weaker demand and lower prices. At the beginning of June the wholesale price was 36 per cent lower than a year ago. Then, in summer, the weather improved and with it a higher demand for this holiday fruit. But the price trend was set - it was still cheap. In August, the average wholesale price dropped to 1.25 zlotys per kilo (a year ago the lowest average was 1.35 zlotys per kilo, but for the vast majority of the summer it was 1.40 zlotys per kilo).

Consumers have also seen the low prices, as retailers have been promoting the sale of watermelons with price cuts. Not infrequently at the peak of the season it was below 1.50 zlotys per kilo! This undoubtedly helped to increase sales. However, the end of August and the beginning of September were already showing a falling current demand, as consumers were moving away from the fruit, which is mainly associated with holidays. And prices? They have risen slightly, but remain lower than a year ago. At the moment it is mostly 1.10-1.60 zlotys per kilo at the large wholesaler, 31 percent lower than in the same period last year.
