Less Chinese cabbage
The supply of Chinese cabbage has significantly decreased in the past two weeks. This cabbage is not easy to grow in the summer, even with much less unpredictable weather conditions than those faced by farmers in July this year. This has affected the supply of "pekinka" cabbage. With much less cabbage in bulk and stable demand (even if not very high), prices had to be affected.
As seen in our chart, this has had a significant impact. Wholesale selling prices of Chinese cabbage have increased by 93 percent from the lowest point in the last decade of June. Currently, they are most often in the range of 4.00-4.50 PLN (0.93-1.05 EUR)/kg and it seems they may rise even further.
On our chart, we can see that in the scale of the last five years, we are now experiencing record high prices for Chinese cabbage. They have definitively moved out of the "summer slump" typical for this vegetable. We mentioned that "pekinka" is the most expensive in the past five years, as indicated in our comparison, but in fact, these are record high prices over a much longer period. Our editorial monitoring has not recorded a higher average price for Chinese cabbage at the beginning of the third decade of July since 2008.
