The prices of Chinese cabbage are getting closer to last year's levels.
The prices of Chinese cabbage in the Polish wholesale market continue to follow a trend that started at the beginning of the second half of August this year. It is a downward trend. Since then, the average selling price of this cabbage has dropped by a significant 63 percent in the wholesale market, from 6.75 PLN/kg to 2.50 PLN/kg.
This means that with wholesale prices ranging from 2.00-3.00 PLN/kg (with a carton), we are already very close to last year's levels. In the same period last year, the average price was 2.30 PLN/kg. However, does this mean that this cabbage has stopped being exceptionally expensive?
No, for now, "Chinese cabbage" is still more expensive than in previous years because the previous season was also record-breaking. By maintaining current prices above last year's levels, they automatically remain the highest compared to previous years - not only the last five, but at least sixteen (the number of seasons in the price archives of fresh-market.pl).
The natural question that market participants ask themselves is: what's next? Will prices drop further? It is not out of the question, but even if it happens, it will not be for long, and it will not be a significant price reduction. Chinese cabbage is generally scarce, especially the high-quality ones. The recent price drops are a result of a quick sale of poor-quality goods, which are currently abundant in the fields. Producers are trying to get rid of them quickly because they know this cabbage is not suitable for storage and must be sold fast. So, it is cheap. Once this product "flows through" the market, prices should rise. Just like last year. Back then, the increase came in December. What about this time? Will we soon see "Chinese cabbage" prices at 7.00 PLN/kg in the Polish wholesale market, and how quickly will it happen?
