Sudden drop in the price of green beans.
There has been a significant change in the pricing situation of green beans on the Polish wholesale market. The current week brought a sudden drop in wholesale prices of this vegetable in the fresh market. Just at the end of last week, this vegetable was remarkably expensive, and the reason for such a situation was supply shortages.
And how does the situation look now? We can see it on our chart. Prices have decreased by 40% day by day. Currently, the selling prices of green beans in large wholesale are mostly 5.00-8.00 PLN/kg (1.17-1.87 EUR/kg), and it seems that it could get even cheaper. On Friday, it was 10.00-12.00 PLN/kg (2.34-2.81 EUR/kg). It is cheaper than a year ago and two years ago, but on the chart, we can also see that despite such a steep price cut, it is still more expensive than the average of the previous five years.
There is something else visible on the chart - such a scenario of a sharp price drop at the end of August is nothing new. We last experienced it in the 2022 season. Even a year ago, prices, after an earlier strengthening, significantly dropped in the last decade of August.
This is quite a natural phenomenon when a previous temporary supply gap is filled. Although the Polish green bean market has already passed the peak supply period in the season, there is still plenty of time until the end of the campaign, and even with slightly more favorable weather conditions, this current supply could significantly improve. And that's what happened this time. Especially since September in Poland can be warm but without extreme heatwaves and other unfavorable synoptic phenomena. This is favorable for green beans.
