Apple exports from Poland 2021/2022 (August-January)

2022-03-23 10:58

Poland's January 2022 apple exports, according to the latest CSO data, were lower than those of December in the previous two seasons. However, growth was maintained year-on-year, both in terms of volume and value. Importantly, January saw an increase in the average price of exported apples compared to December (although its dynamics was much smaller than in the December-November relationship). What is the situation of Polish apple exports in figures?

The volume of apple exports in the period August 2021-January 2022 amounted to 430.9 thousand tonnes. In relation to the same period of the 2020/2021 season, this is an increase of 106.3 thousand tonnes, or 32.7 percent. In relation to the 2019/2020 season, it is an increase of 84.2 thousand tons, or 24.3 percent.

As for the value of apples exported from Poland, it was PLN 716.5 million in the period under review. This value was higher than that of the corresponding period of the 2020/2021 season by PLN 125.9 million, i.e. by 21.3 per cent. On the other hand, compared to the 2019/2020 season, the increase amounted to PLN 78.5 million, or 12.35 per cent.

In the current season, the volume of Polish apple exports was higher than in the previous two years in each of the following five months: in August, September, October, November and December, as shown in the graph below. Only in January did these proportions change. This is because the upward trend in the current season, which continued until November, broke down in December and this negative dynamic intensified in January. The same applies to value. In December the downward trend started and in January 2022 the value was lower than in the previous two years. Exports in January 2022 were 17.5 per cent lower than December in volume terms and 14.7 per cent lower in value terms.

An important piece of information is that in January 2021 an increase in the average price of apples exported from Poland, which began in December, was maintained. However, the dynamics of this increase was weaker than in December, as the change from January to December was a mere +3.4%, while the increase in the relationship December to November was as much as +20.4%. Notably, for the first time the monthly average price of the 2021/2022 season was higher than in the previous two seasons. The difference to January 2020 is +4.2 per cent.
