Carrots in Poland cheaper than a year ago

2021-08-11 11:26
Sales prices for brushed carrots in Poland are currently, as far as large wholesalers are concerned, mostly between 0.90 and 1.20 PLN per kilo. These prices have been falling quite significantly in July. This is symptomatic of the fact that their average level is now below last year's level. This can be seen on our graph below.

The average price of 1.05 PLN/kg still remains relatively high compared to the last ten seasons. To be more precise, it is third after that of 2020 and 2019. This is because we can still see the effects of the delayed start of the marketing season for this year's carrots and the supply of this vegetable is not excessive.

But it is worth noticing, that despite the increase (according to ARMA data) of edible carrot acreage in 2021 by 3 per cent, the harvest of this vegetable estimated by Central Statistical Office is to amount to 630 thousand tons, by as much as 14 per cent (103 thousand tons) less than a year before. It seems that lower prices this year are partly a result of weaker market situation for carrots. But it should also be remembered that agro-meteorological conditions in July and August in both 2020 and 2019 were very unfavorable for growing vegetables, which pushed up their prices.
