Eastern Europe: tomatoes become top traded product in Week 33

2026-08-19 07:42

Tomato supply increased in Week 33 of 2026 and tomatoes became the most actively traded product on a regional fresh produce trading platform covering Eastern Europe, Central Asia and neighbouring markets.

The rise in tomato offers came during a week in which the total number of posted sales listings declined, but the geographical range of active traders expanded to 12 countries. Among origins relevant to European trade, offers from Azerbaijan and the Netherlands returned, while seller activity from Türkiye increased.

Ukraine, Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Egypt were among the five most active countries by number of listings during the week. At the same time, sellers from Ukraine posted fewer offers than a week earlier, changing the balance of activity between nearby supplier countries.

Tomatoes moved ahead of other produce categories as cucumber activity weakened sharply. The number of cucumber sellers fell by almost 50% week on week, while offers of sweet peppers and eggplants became more frequent.

The increase in tomato availability coincided with broader growth in vegetable offers in the region. Trading activity in potatoes and onions also strengthened, while sweet corn appeared more often in sales offers during the same week.
