France reports cucumber shortage after heatwave-driven demand surge
French cucumber supply is currently below buyer demand after successive heatwaves lifted consumption and reduced marketable output. Grower representatives say the shortage coincides with retail pressure on purchase prices linked to a planned Lidl promotion.
Légumes de France criticised the pricing structure of an upcoming Lidl cucumber promotion, stating that the supplier purchase price is being set around the retailer’s intended promotional shelf price and that later negotiations only confirm that level. The association said retailers are competing to undercut cucumber prices, sometimes by only a few cents, with the effect passed back to suppliers and producers.
The trade dispute comes during a tight French cucumber market. Tomatoes and Cucumbers of France reported that heatwave conditions pushed cucumber demand above the volume growers can currently supply. Yann Le Cunff of the producer association said France is “currently facing a shortage of cucumbers,” with demand so high during the heatwave that it would have exceeded supply even without additional production losses.
French growers also reported yield, quality and harvest-volume losses after successive heatwaves and unstable weather during the season. A national estimate of heat-related losses has not yet been calculated; the producer association said the scale and the share attributable to heat will be assessed at the end of the season.
Regional trading indicators also point to tighter cucumber availability. In week 33, the number of cucumber sellers on a major Eastern Europe and neighbouring-country trade platform fell by almost 50% week on week, while cucumber prices rose sharply. During the same week, offers from the Netherlands returned to the platform and activity from Türkiye increased, but cucumber listings still contracted.
French volumes are beginning to rise again with the season’s second production peak, which normally falls in weeks 33 and 34. The increase follows the heatwave period in which demand was above current supply and producer groups reported pressure on grower returns from retail promotions.
