Chinese cabbage still expensive in Poland
On the Polish market of Chinese cabbage we have another season in recent years, in which its beginning is marked by low supply. In the 2021/2022 season this current supply is so low that it translates into record high prices. And yet the impression is that the situation on the pecking order market has calmed down considerably compared with the first half of May.
This is clearly an effect of the fact that the uncertainty of that time has disappeared and market participants know what they will be dealing with in the coming weeks. Cabbage is scarce, so prices are relatively high, but it is also clear that supply is slowly improving. Nature has somewhat caught up with the delays caused by the historically cold April and May.
As you can see from the graph, we therefore have price realities similar to June 2019. Currently, selling prices for Chinese cabbage are in the range of 2.40-2.80 PLN per kilo, as much as 86 per cent higher year-on-year, but in June 2020 we had a dynamic increase in supply and an equally dynamic decrease in prices for this cabbage. Anyway, as the case of the aforementioned 2019/2020 season shows, it does not take much for the prices of "pekinki" to fall dramatically in June. The key factor is the weather. Nevertheless, it seems that this year, even with large price drops, Chinese cabbage will remain relatively expensive, at least until the summer varieties are harvested.
