The pre-Christmas period in Poland brings an increase in demand for many fruits. Oranges and tangerines are very popular, but sales of table grapes tend to increase as well. However, it is worth noting that a year ago, already in the pandemic period, grapes did not enjoy the same increase in consumption as citrus fruit. Nevertheless, last year before Christmas consumer interest in this fruit increased.
This year we can also expect such an increase in demand. However, it may be weaker than usual due to the unfavourable conditions which have caused the current prices of grapes on the Polish market to be higher than last year. They are also much higher than those at the end of 2019.
This is because light grapes are currently offered on a larger scale in the Polish wholesale market at prices ranging from 6.00 to 13.00 PLN/kg, depending on variety, country of origin and quality. Dark grapes are usually priced between 5.00 and 12.00 PLN/kg. The former are consequently more expensive by 19 per cent year-on-year and by 36 per cent in relation to the beginning of December 2019. The latter, on the other hand, have become more expensive by 26 per cent year-on-year and by 31 per cent in relation to the price two years ago.
There are several reasons for this. First of all, the availability of these fruits on our market is a problem. This is the result of both seasonal factors and problems with harvesting, but also of a reduction in the flow of many kinds of fruit coming into Europe from distant countries. We have a global logistics crisis, which has brought a large increase in freight prices, 'boosted' by rising fuel prices. The policy of European governments on pandemics is also having an impact here, as importers are cutting back on purchases with the next lockdown.
