Apple exports from Poland 2020/21 (07-11.2020)

2021-01-19 12:36

The cumulative volume of apple exports in the 2020/2021 season (from July to November 2020) amounted to 180.77 thousand tonnes, according to the Central Statistical Office (CSO), and its value reached PLN 337.28 million. This means a decrease, both in terms of quantity and value, to the two previous seasons. The decrease was significant especially in terms of quantity.

Comparing the current season with the two previous ones, it can be seen that the volume of Polish apple exports was lower than last year's by 61.4 thousand tonnes, or 25.4 per cent (after October this indicator was 42.6 per cent), and its value fell year-on-year by 83.8 million PLN, or 23.2 per cent). Compared to the 2018/2019 season, apple exports fell by 85.5 thousand tonnes, or 32.1 per cent, and by PLN 23.6 million, or 6.5 per cent.

And what is the breakdown of apple exports by month?

As can be seen from the graph, exports in November 2020 increased compared to those in October. In volume terms it was an increase of 10.3 per cent and in value terms it was an increase of 14.7 per cent. However, between November 2020 and November 2019, we again have a lower level of apple exports (it was higher in October). Admittedly, the differences are not large - -2.1 per cent in volume terms and -1.7 per cent in value terms - but it would not be good if such a trend were to become entrenched.

Now let's take a look at the average prices achieved by Polish apples in exports (bearing in mind that their value is slightly understated in the presented data, as apples for processing are also included).

And here the data look, from the exporters' point of view, more favourable. The average price in November 2020 was 7 gr/kg higher than in October. This is an increase of 4.0 per cent. This means that the downward trend in apple export prices seen since July has been halted. Equally importantly, the price in November 2020 equalled the level of the same month in 2019. It was also significantly higher (+£0.70/kg) than two years ago.
