2021-11-22 12:31
An analysis of CSO data on Polish apple exports in September this year shows that they were very high compared to previous years. Both in quantitative terms (51.3 thousand tonnes) and in value terms (PLN 87.7 million). This can be seen in the graphs below.

September 2017 by 136 per cent,

September 2019 by 57 per cent,

Below is a graph of how the average price of apples exported from Poland in September evolved. As can be seen, its volatility was not high. The difference between the minimum and maximum price, after eliminating the unusual September 2018, when prices bottomed out sharply due to a record harvest, is 0.29 PLN/kg. Including September 2018 it is 0.59 zl/kg.

In September 2021, the largest buyers of Polish apples (this breakdown only applies to apples in the category 08081080 - Fresh apples, excluding cider apples and includes countries that imported more than 1 thousand tonnes of these fruits)were:

Egypt - 14.7 thousand tonnes, average price 2.26 PLN/kg;

Germany - 11.2 thousand tonnes, average price 0.94 PLN/kg;

Romania - 3.4 thousand tonnes, average price 1.84 PLN/kg;

Belarus - 3.0 thousand tonnes, average price 1.37 PLN/kg;

Netherlands - 2.8 thousand tonnes, average price 1.66 PLN/kg;

France - 2.5 thousand tonnes, average price 1.25 PLN/kg;

Czech Republic - 1.7 thousand tonnes, average price 2.15 PLN/kg;

Sweden - 1.4 thousand tonnes, average price 2.12 PLN/kg;

United Kingdom - 1.0 thousand tonnes, average price 2.74 PLN/kg.

As you can see, of the top importers, only Egypt had a price above 2 PLN/kg. Apples are being bought very cheaply in Poland by Germans. The reason for this is that they buy unprocessed, unsorted apples. In fact, three out of four previous Septembers, it was Germany that bought the most Polish apples. And it is to countries such as the Czech Republic, Sweden, and the United Kingdom that the goods go, at prices that include a high added value.
