Carrots in Poland - above PLN 1.50 at the beginning of spring?

2021-02-15 12:07
The first severe winter for several years, which arrived in Poland in January this year, has had a significant impact on the situation in the Polish wholesale trade of fresh vegetables. It also had an impact on the carrot market. As a result, the carrot market, which had remained stagnant since October, revived in the first week of January.

Since then, the average selling price of washed carrots has risen by almost 51 per cent, i.e. by more than half, at the large wholesaler. It is now at 0.95 PLN per kilo, as sales prices for such carrots are in the range of 0.75-1.15 PLN per kilo.

As you can see on the graph, the average price is already relatively high for this phase of the season, although there is still a long way to go before records are set. If the winter weather persists until the end of the calendar period, prices could still rise. Will they follow in the footsteps of the 2014/2015 season and be above the 1.50 PLN/kg ceiling by early spring?

This seems unlikely at the moment. Unless we had cold weather with very low temperatures until the end of winter. Otherwise there will be no factor supporting such a dynamic growth. For the time being, it is not demand. This has improved somewhat in the last month, but without catering there will be no clear improvement in this area and over time the pressure of imported carrots (mainly from the Netherlands) will increase.
