Chinese cabbage in Poland - price madness

2021-04-15 09:38
Prices of the chinese cabbage in the Polish large wholesale market have been growing since almost the beginning of March this year, and this trend has only gained momentum over time. In the first decade of April, the average selling price of "Chinese" in the large wholesale has already reached a record high compared to at least twelve previous seasons, as shown in the graph below.

As can be seen from this graph, the price situation on the Chinese cabbage market has changed fundamentally in the current season. In the first third, prices were very low. The improvement came at the end of August and continued into September. Then we had a price depression again. Finally, after the New Year, something stirred and then it went.

The supply of nice Chinese cabbage is already very limited and interest remains high (especially for these supply realities). As a consequence, prices have recently risen rapidly and are currently selling at 4.50-5.50 zlotys per kilo for nice green goods at the large wholesale level. A level of 6.00 PLN/kg is even being reported.

The question is whether this trend is likely to continue? After all, prices are already very high. In addition, our market has just seen the first deliveries of imported Chinese cabbage from Hungary with prices at 4.00 PLN/kg. Knowing life, they will soon be lower. Taking this into account, we may risk a statement that the upward trend of Polish 'pekinek' prices has either run out, or will be halted in the coming days. All the more so, as such attractive prices will mean that young Polish "pekinka" should also appear on the market early (weather permitting, of course).
