Chinese cabbage in Poland - will there be a price collapse?

2021-02-09 12:07
In February, the prices of Chinese cabbage are falling quite often. This is a temporary "price collapse", which in unfavourable conditions may extend even to the beginning of March. Then, however, prices go up as stocks, especially of good-quality, nice stock. Will this season also see such a February reduction?

As we previously wrote on fresh-market.pl, from the beginning of December 2020, the average selling price of Chinese cabbage at the large wholesaler followed the price of the 2015/2016 season. Such a correlation was very close until the last week of January. In 2016 then came the aforementioned "February bottom", in the current season prices have remained, with fluctuations, but at a fairly stable level. This can be seen in our graph below.

However, now we can see that the slowdown in the trade  in the large wholesale is more visible and prices have already reacted. Indeed, this was not prevented by the arrival of the cold winter. As a consequence, now selling prices are mostly 1.80-2.30 PLN/kg.

However, it is possible that the low temperatures have curbed deeper discounts and will prevent them in the future, and this may translate into a situation where the described February price hole phenomenon will be less pronounced this time around. Synoptics are forecasting frosty weather until at least next week. This should also strengthen the demand for "chinese" as lettuce imports are likely to fall and prices will rise.
