Courgette this time cheaper - news from the Polish market

2021-02-11 11:44
It has been a real price swing. Since the start of the courgette import season, we have had two relatively high price peaks punctuated by a November-December "price bottom". We write "relatively" high, because average prices at 11.50 PLN("peak" from the third decade of January this year) are still far from such records as the average from January 2017, i.e. the ceiling of 20.00 PLN/kg.

But even so, 11.50 PLN/kg at wholesale is a high price that has a negative effect on current demand. It was forced by difficult weather conditions in Spain, where the winter attack in January seriously reduced the production of many vegetables, including courgettes. It is now cheaper. A downward period has passed on the price swing.

At wholesale auctions in the Spanish province of Almeria (Andalusia region), prices began to fall as early as mid-January. Now the average there is 0.65 euro/kg, 79 per cent lower than in the middle of last month. In Poland, prices at the large wholesalers started to fall after 19 January and have since dropped by 48 per cent to the current level of 5.00-7.00 PLN per kilo.
