Domestic aubergines are more expensive in Poland this year

2021-07-14 11:14
The previous two seasons were not typical for Polish aubergines. Capricious weather meant that the supply peak, which should fall at the end of July and the beginning of August, was marked quite poorly in terms of prices (2020), or not marked at all (2019).

Prices in both the 2019 and 2020 seasons remained generally quite high, especially in 2020 (the average price at the large wholesaler during the peak supply period was 3.50 PLN/kg, rising to 5.75 PLN/kg by the end of the season). For comparison, in the typical season, in 2018, the minimum average price level was 2.10 PLN/kg, and at the end of the then season it was 4.50 PLN/kg.
The current season also does not promise to be typical. The weather this summer is not spoiling farmers and is negatively affecting the current supply of fruit and vegetables. This may generate shortages on the market and thus be a pro-raising factor for prices, including for aubergines. But on the other hand, it also means quality problems, i.e. potentially a higher proportion of poorer quality and cheaper goods on the market, which will translate into an arithmetic average of prices.

For the time being, aubergines remain relatively expensive in the Polish wholesale market and have recently risen slightly, by around 14 per cent, in terms of prices in the large wholesale market. Currently it is usually between 3.50 PLN and 4.50 PLN per kilo. This is more expensive by 14 per cent year-on-year.
