First domestic plums on the Polish market

2021-07-20 11:56
The first batches of domestically produced plums have appeared on the domestic wholesale market in Poland. Of course, it is still very early in the plum season in Poland, so we have a very limited number of varieties and the available quantities are very small.

In Poland, the early plum is not popular in cultivation, because it is not an easy crop. The yield of these varieties is poor and the fruit ripens at very different rates, even when exposed to the sun. On the other hand, an early entry into the market with a plum gives a considerable profit, because consumers are willing to pay more for a seasonal novelty.

This year, this premium is even higher than usual, because the plum season is significantly delayed, like other fruits, so the supply is even less than normal at the threshold of the third decade of July. Prices in small wholesalers (because we still have to wait for large wholesalers) are falling, but their current level of 3.00-5.00 PLN/kg is on average by 7 percent higher year on year. And let's recall that last year the weather was not favourable either and fruit was expensive in this period of July. Around 20 July 2019, the average price was 2.75 PLN/kg, so the current price is 45.5 per cent higher than that year. The dominant domestic plum variety at present is Herman.
