First homegrown broccoli in the Polish market

The serious trading season for domestic broccoli is still ahead of us. It usually starts at the beginning of June at the large wholesalers. By then, the supply of Polish broccoli is already relatively high and prices are at a level more readily accepted by buyers.

But the first batches of domestic broccoli appear on the market earlier. This year, they have been available at small wholesalers since this week, which is even a few days later than a year ago. And let us recall that last season also started with a delay compared to the typical schedule. For we have the second year in a row with capricious spring weather.

Prices of domestic broccoli in the small wholesale are at the same level as a year ago. It is 5.00 zł/piece and this is a high level, as it is at the beginning when the supply of the commodity is negligible. However, this year's start of the Polish broccoli season has one clear difference from last year. Back then, imported broccoli was also expensive (the average selling price at the end of May and the beginning of June 2020 at large wholesalers was also 5.00 PLN/unit). This and the weather allowed domestic broccoli to maintain this price level until early June as well. Now, imported broccoli is offered at 3.50-4.00 PLN/unit in the large wholesalers, as their prices have been successively falling in recent days. This will most likely force down the prices of the domestic offer, although of course much depends here on the weather.
