Fruit market in Poland flooded with cherries

2021-07-12 11:18
The supply of cherries on the Polish market has been growing dynamically since the beginning of the second decade of June. Previously, this fruit was relatively scarce and more expensive than in previous seasons at the same stage. This was due to the delayed harvest this year caused by the cold spring.

But in June nature made up for the delay and more than made up for it. This year's supply of cherries has already been high since the second half of June. For a while, the fall in the wholesale price of this fruit was still halted, as can be seen in the graph below.

But in July, the current supply of cherries grew even faster, quickly passing the saturation point. The domestic market was literally flooded with cherries and wholesale prices fell well below the ceilings of previous seasons. Now, big wholesalers are offering this fruit at only 3.00-5.00 PLN/kg. A year ago, the average price for these fruits was as high as 10.00 PLN/kg. The last time the average price dropped to 4.00 PLN/kg was in July 2016.

Of course, often in July, at the peak of the season, prices of cherries go down a lot. This is unfortunately typical for the Polish market. Poland is not a large exporter of cherries. There is also no developed processing of these fruits that would "remove" excess fruit from the market and those of poorer quality that are now driving down the price on the fresh market.
