Gala apple stocks still high in Poland

2021-03-10 14:57

The latest available WAPA data on apple stocks is as of 1 February 2021. For the Gala variety, the estimate is 326,000 tonnes in EU countries. In Poland, Gala stocks were estimated at 80,000 tonnes on that date. This is a lot - both in relation to last year and in relation to stocks in other European countries.

In Poland, on 1 February 2020, Gala stocks were at a level of just 70 000 tonnes, and the dynamics of their decline were similar to those now. Then, in January, 40,000 tonnes of Gala disappeared from Polish warehouses and the same amount "disappeared" in January this year. But then, the February 2020 "disappearance" was also at 40,000 tonnes, and this year there is a strong likelihood that this February's pace has slowed.

The reported Polish stocks of Gala - 80 thousand tonnes - are the largest level in Europe. In France, at the same time, there were 79 000 tonnes, and in Italy 73 000 tonnes. Other countries have stocks of this variety below 30 000 tonnes.

The fact that stocks of Gala apples in Poland are high can be seen from the prices. Not only was there no upward trend in February and the beginning of March, but the purchase prices of Gala had two discounts in February. Buying prices for large wholesalers are now at 1.40-1.60 zł/kg for 65+ calibres and 1.50-1.90 zł/kg for 70+ calibres. This is significantly lower than a year ago, as can be seen in our graph below.
