Greenhouse cucumber prices are falling in Poland, but...

2021-04-15 09:58
The beginning of the regular season of domestic greenhouse cucumbers in Poland brought a dynamic fall in the wholesale prices of these vegetables, which is quite typical for the initial phase of the season. But then, in the second decade of March, these prices stabilised and this continued until the beginning of April. The downward trend only resumed ten days ago, as can be seen in our chart below.

Since then, sales prices for greenhouse cucumbers at the large wholesaler have fallen by an average of a quarter and are now in the range of 4.00-5.00 PLN/kg. This is a level low enough to basically stop cucumber imports (at least at the wholesale level, retail chains are sometimes guided by other considerations in this respect).

Looking at the graph and comparing this price level with prices in previous seasons, it is clear that it is still more expensive than in four of the past five years. What is more, it seems that the deterioration in the weather has slowed down the growth of current cucumber production in Polish greenhouses and thus halted further price falls. When spring returns, cucumbers will be cheap again.
