Greenhouse cucumbers - a rapid fall in prices in Poland

2021-03-01 12:43
The last week of February this year brought a fall in domestic greenhouse cucumber prices. The new season for these vegetables in Polish greenhouses has only recently begun, but the very warm weather of the past few days has clearly accelerated vegetation and the supply of Polish cucumbers has increased by leaps and bounds, with prices following suit.

Of course, the quantities of domestic cucumbers hitting the market now are not yet large, but the change in supply has been so significant that the level of current selling prices at large wholesalers is at a level lower than in the corresponding period of the previous five years or more, as can be seen in the chart below (indeed, fresh-market.pl's price monitoring data show that prices have not been cheaper since 2011).

Sale prices of domestic greenhouse cucumbers at the end of February amounted to 6.00-7.00 zlotys per kilo in the large wholesale. This is nearly 32 percent less than a week earlier. And by 24 per cent less year-on-year. This decrease has caused Polish cucumber prices to be at a level close to that of imported cucumbers, which at the end of February were usually offered at 5.00-7.00 PLN per kg by the large wholesalers. If this trend continues, Polish cucumbers will quickly become competitive against imports. The problem is that it has become colder again and synoptics are forecasting the return of frost, which means there is a high probability that prices will rebound.
