Higher supply of imported blueberries in Poland

2021-01-29 10:57
The second half of January brought some improvement in the supply of imported highbush blueberries available on the Polish market. This refers mainly to the retail offer available via commercial chains.

The improvement in retail supply was small, as blueberries are still an exclusive and relatively expensive commodity in winter. In wholesale, the supply changes were even less visible because blueberries are rarely on offer in winter in small shops or at markets. In addition, we have a closed HoReCa channel - an important buyer of this assortment.

The improvement in supply is mainly due to the larger current harvest in South America, where the harvest season in Chile and Peru is at its peak. In the first half of January there (Chile) were delays due to rainfall, but now exports have accelerated.

Supply has improved, but not so much that prices have fallen compared to those in the first half of January. In the small wholesale market, blueberries are offered at a stable price of 10.00 PLN/250 g (40 PLN/kg). Prices in retail chains are at the level of 47-55 PLN per kilogram depending on the packaging. However, it is worth noting that the current wholesale prices are still slightly lower than last year's level of 11.00 PLN/250 g (44 PLN/kg).
