Idared in Poland much cheaper than a year ago

In the 2019/2020 season, winter and the beginning of spring brought a significant increase in demand for Idared apples and, consequently, an increase in their prices. The upward trend accelerated in March and April 2020 and the average purchase price of Idared calibre 70+ increased to 2.65 PLN/kg, and the season in June ended with an average price of 3.40 PLN/kg.

Now the situation is quite different. Idared prices, instead of rising, have even fallen in February, and then stabilized and most often apples of this variety (caliber 70+, from KA) are purchased at 1.00-1.10 zł/kg, an average 32% cheaper year-on-year.

This is the result of several factors, but one of the main ones is larger stocks of apples than a year ago. According to WAPA data, Idared stocks in Poland on 1 March this year were at 170,000 tonnes, while a year ago it was only 110,000 tonnes. On 1.03.2018 it was even less - only 90 thousand tonnes. However, the positive information for producers of this variety is the fact that sales of Idared in February did not fall (as was the case with popular varieties such as Gala, Golden and Prince). In January 2021, from Polish warehouses "went" 30 thousand tons of Idared and in February the same amount. (a year earlier it was 20 thousand tonnes). It can also be expected that trade in Idared will become more active over time.
