Kiwi in Poland- price volatility continues

2021-02-15 12:10
Since the end of last year, kiwi fruit prices have been subject to some fluctuations on the Polish wholesale market. They went up a little and then down again, only to bounce back up again soon. This was more pronounced, as is typical, in the small wholesale trade. In the large wholesale trade, the frequency of changes was lower, but fluctuations were also visible.

What is important is that these fluctuations, despite an amplitude of 1 PLN/kg, i.e. more than 1/6 of the highest average price in this period (6.00 PLN/kg), did not generate any trend - neither upward nor downward. In mid-December last year, the average price for green kiwifruit in importers' offers (in the wholesale trade on a larger scale) was 5.50 PLN/kg and now it is also 5.50 PLN/kg, as the price range is currently 4.50-6.50 PLN/kg.

The question is what will be the further development of the situation. A year ago, February brought an increase in prices (the average rose from 5.50 PLN/kg to 6.00 PLN/kg, but this was limited. Then in April there was a short-lived "price bottom", and after 20 April 2020 prices started to rise dynamically. Two years ago, March brought an increase in prices, but at that time kiwifruit were cheaper, rising from (average) 4.40 PLN/kg. This year, demand for kiwifruit is good, but not as high as during the first wave of the pandemic. And it is unlikely to grow as much. On the other hand, information from the kiwi-producing countries indicates that there is enough stock for longer than a year ago. So it seems more likely that prices will stabilise or even correct than rise.
