Lemons in Poland are cheaper than a year ago

2021-01-27 12:52

Citrus growers' and exporters' hopes that the second wave of the pandemic would bring a repeat of demand and prices for lemons from last spring have proved to be dashed. Demand for this fruit (and other citrus) remains good, but not so good as to repeat the price increases as occurred in late winter and spring last year.

And this difference is beginning to be visible in the relationship of current prices to those of last year. Also on the Polish wholesale market, where as recently as last week prices for lemons remained higher year-on-year. Now they are already lower. The reason for this change is the opposite of the price trends this year and last year. Then, at the end of January, the price of lemons started to rise, driven by strengthening demand and helped by the fact that the Spanish harvest was smaller. Now, a rather downward trend is active and, in any case, in January there was a correction of 15 per cent in the prices of lemons offered by importers to the wholesale trade on a larger scale. At present, these prices are most often 3.00-5.50 PLN/kg. As you can see on the graph below, the average is lower than last year's but still slightly higher (+6 per cent) than two years ago. It can also be seen that, in general, lemon prices in the second half of the last decade remain higher than in the first half.
