More and more Spanish blueberries on the Polish market

2021-02-12 10:49
As far as the highbush blueberry market in Poland is concerned, the situation remains stable for now. Lockdown has bolted sales to the HoReCa channel, the most serious buyer of this fruit in winter, leaving only the possibility of retail. And here demand for relatively expensive blueberries imported from South America remains limited.

Blueberries from Peru or Chile (the supply of the former has been decreasing, the latter hasn't increased) are offered at 40.00 PLN/kg, packed in 250g containers. Blueberries packed in such a way are currently the most popular in retail. As we have already written on fresh-market.pl, because of the worse harvest in Chile and delays in Morocco and Spain caused by unfavourable weather, there were fears of a decrease in supply and an increase in blueberry prices at the end of February and the beginning of March.

But Spanish figures at the end of January show that the blueberry harvest campaign there seems to have caught up somewhat and the supply of the fruit was growing fast enough that prices fell in late January below previous years' levels. The average price in week 4 at the grower fell to €5.56/kg (down from €6.05/kg, or 8 per cent) and is down 23 per cent from week 4 in 2020 (€7.23/kg) and 24 per cent from week 4 in 2019 (€7.35/kg). If this trend continues, blueberry prices on the Polish market should not increase.
