More expensive courgettes on the Polish market

2021-08-17 10:30
This year's trading season for domestic courgette in Poland is very different from last year. Weather conditions have meant that this year the peak in supply was clearly in July, whereas a year ago it was only in August, as July was then cold and rainy. The capricious weather has left a very strong mark on the courgette market this year.

Due to a very cold spring, the domestic courgette marketing season started with a long delay and high prices. Then nature caught up. The hot weather in July caused many problems for vegetable production, but the supply of courgette grew dynamically. This was evident in prices, which fell from an average of PLN 4.50/kg to PLN 1.30/kg in less than three weeks at the large wholesaler.

But the price hole was short-lived this season, at around 10 days (compared to more than five weeks in 2019), then the aforementioned capricious weather, specifically the heat and frequent storms combined with heavy rainfall, began to have an increasingly negative impact on the supply of courgettes and their quality. As a result, since 23 July we have seen an increase in the price of this vegetable. At the large wholesaler level, prices have already increased by 69 percent to 1.80-2.60 PLN/kg (sale prices). At buyers (for the fresh market), prices have risen from 0.70-0.80 PLN/kg to 1.20-1.50 PLN/kg.
