On the Polish market lemons are mainly from Turkey

2021-05-17 10:42
A year ago, May brought stability to the wholesale lemon market. The calmness came after a hectic period in March and April when, under the influence of panicky "covid" moods, the demand for citrus went wild and pushed the prices of lemons at large wholesalers to the level of 9.50 PLN per kg on average.

There has been no repeat of that buying frenzy in the current season. Consumers are no longer panicking, while the overall demand for lemons has been hit hard by the HoReCa blockade.  The upward trend in lemon prices in the Polish wholesale market emerged only at the end of April and lasted only until the first days of May. By then, it had only brought prices back to the level before the correction which took place at the end of the first week of April. Large wholesaler prices are back in the 4.50-5.50 PLN/kg range. This is 47 per cent cheaper year-on-year.

Prices have stabilised, but the structure of the offer of imported lemons is changing. There is less and less fruit from Spain and Turkish lemons are dominating the market. However, Turkey will also soon be on the back foot as the citrus market undergoes a more fundamental shift to imports from the southern hemisphere. Fruit from Argentina and South Africa will soon start arriving.
