Paprika in Poland at record high prices

2021-04-01 11:38
The end of March and the beginning of April is a period when the price of imported peppers often rises. This is due to the fact that in spring the pepper harvesting season in Spain enters its final phase, while in countries further north the harvest is still beginning and the supply of pepper in Europe begins to decrease.

This year we are seeing just such a mechanism, but it has been magnified. The poor weather conditions in Spain have meant that the availability of peppers has fallen well below normal. On the other hand, there are still no peppers from the Netherlands on the market. Consequently, the hole in supply is much deeper and prices have reacted with above-average increases.

In Spain, prices at wholesale auctions in Almeria rose in the last week of March to EUR 5.12/kg on average for red California-type peppers. They have now come down slightly (average yesterday EUR 3.50/kg), but it seems that the upward trend is not letting up.

On the Polish market, the increase in the price of imported peppers has in fact continued since the end of February, and it is a dynamic increase. In the period from 22 February to now, they have increased by 207 percent on average! Now, red peppers in the wholesale trade on a larger scale are offered at 18.00-22.00 PLN/kg, which gives an average of 20.00 PLN/kg. And this is a record level, at least for the last ten years.

Interestingly, paprika price records have been broken year after year in the last period. In 2019 the highest average price level for red peppers was 15.00 PLN/kg in May, in 2019 it was 19.00 PLN/kg in April (on the wave of the covid panic).
