Poland - young cabbage cheaper, but not cheap

Prices of young white cabbage at large wholesalers i Poland fell in June and July, but in both of these months, especially in July, the dynamics of this trend was tempered by periods of price stabilization. Consequently, at the end of this month, wholesale prices of young cabbage are of course significantly lower than at the beginning of the phase of trade in this cabbage per kilogram (by 50 percent), but they are not among the lowest compared to the previous ten seasons.

This can be seen in our graph. At the moment, prices of baby cabbage in large wholesalers in Poland intended for the fresh market usually amount to 0.45-0.65 PLN/kg. This is much cheaper than in the record-breaking 2019 season (by 61 per cent), but so much more expensive than in six of the previous ten seasons. Year-on-year here we have a 28 per cent increase.

There are also much higher year-on-year prices for young cabbage for processing. At the end of July 2020, the situation in this segment was dire, with prices falling to 0.12-0.15 PLN per kilo (compared to a very low demand). Now prices of cabbage for processing are close to the bottom of the aforementioned fresh market price range and amount to PLN 0.40-0.50 per kg, depending on the region of Poland.
