Polish orchards not too bad so far

2021-04-16 10:08
Polish orchards have been spared the big temperature drops that swept across Europe in several waves in March and April. At least for the time being. Even the south of the continent was not spared by the frosts. In many places the losses for fruit growers and farmers in general (including grape and vegetable growers) are enormous.

Up to 80-90 per cent of the early varieties of fruit that were sold at a stage of vegetation that made them very susceptible to low temperatures were frozen out. Smaller losses were recorded in orchards equipped with anti-frost protection (nets and sprinklers).

Polish orchards have avoided this, and if we continue to be without major temperature drops, including the "cold gardener" period, our orchard growers will be in a favorable position on the European market in the next marketing season. The problem is that the weather is unpredictable and nobody knows what it will be like. Will there be a repeat of the 2018 harvest or the 2019 low?

The loss of early fruit in Europe also has another aspect. It means that the current marketing season may last longer, and demand for Polish apples will increase significantly towards the end of the season. The question is, will the quality of what remains in Polish cold stores permit export?
